Down in Pine Ridge, Abner discovered that Squire’s theater violates a fire hazard law. Today Grandpap tells his trouble to Abner. He complains over the contract that Squire backed out of, and left grandpap without a job. When grandpap hears about the news regarding the fire hazard, he thinks it to be the best news yet to get back at Squire.
Lum joins the conversation, and he is asked to give grandpap’s contract a look. Abner marvels to grandpap at Lum’s mastery of all those big, legal words in the contract. Despite the flood of big words, what can grandpap do? Is the contract legal? Will Lum, the Justice of the Peace, need to serve a warrant on Squire?
Lum is suddenly reluctant to serve arrest papers on Squire, because he feels it would be manipulation of the law to serve his personal purposes. Grandpap feels otherwise, and demand the law be carried out.
