After taking his lady to see a movie, Gildy dries Paula home. After a brief romantic in the car, Gildersleeve sees Paula to the door, and returns home. That is, if his car will start. The next morning, his family gives him a hard time over the car being in the wrong driveway, and a broken flowerpot in their yard. They also tease him about getting married soon. Marjorie asked him to take her engagement ring to the jeweler for an adjustment when he heads out to go to work. After a clash with his neighbor, Mr. Bullard, Gildersleeve arrives at the drugstore.
The great man complains to Peavy about his recent clash with Mr. Bullard, and leaves the ring with him to take to the jeweler next door. As Gildy leaves, Bullard enters. The neighbor thinks that Marjorie’s ring is one that Gildersleeve is planning to offer to his sister, Paula.
In the office of the water Commissioner, Gildersleeve has a visit from Judge Hooker. The judge tries to convince Gildy he should spend the weekend out of town. Maybe on a fishing trip. It’s clear that Bullard wants to get rid of him for a while, but why? He also wants to send Paula away on a long road trip. Gildy is aware that Bullard thinks the engagement ring is for his sister, and plans to stir up the flames.
In the Bullard home, he is bent on keeping the two lovers apart. Paul explains the mix-up with the ring. That it really belongs to Marjorie. Now it’s Bullard’s turn to devise a devious plan to get back at his rival. Which of the two gents will end up with the upper hand listen in and enjoy the battle of wits.
