Don Wilson rolls back the clock, and we join Jack in Rochester as he prepares for the new year celebrations. Jack learns the bad news about how Rochester lost his cufflinks. Mary Livingston enters and discusses Jack’s new girlfriend. Does she really look like a gopher? Carolyn, Jack’s new little neighbor arrives. Did she hide Jack’s to pay? Although the girl wants to go on out on the town with him, he reminds her he promised he would do it once she turned 18. Who knows, Jack might even be 39 or 40 years old by then. Mr. Billingsley arrives to remark on Jack’s cockeyed appearance.
The band plays a few bars of traveling music, and we join the gang at the party. Phil Harris and his band of the featured attraction at the Biltmore bowl. Jack, Dennis and Mary take their seats as the band begins to play. Phil joins the gang at her table to discuss his band members. Jack has trouble with the waiter and getting party favors such as confetti in the party hat. Mary spots the fictional cowboy, Rodney Dangerfield entering with Jack’s date who stood him up. Phil Harris gets the force of the started, and introduces the big stars in the audience. Dennis is invited onstage to sing “rose O’Day.”
Although he has tried his best to be humble, Jack’s not-so-subtle hints finally get through to fill. He takes the spotlight to play his signature tune, “Love in Bloom.” However, the plays him off stage with a few bars of auld lang syne as the new year arrives.
