A Navy flier was home for Christmas 1943. While travelling, he gets a telegram that calls him back to duty at Great Lakes. Time is tight, but a fellow traveler describes how the Lieutenant can still make a short lay over, and see his girlfriend, and still make it to the base in time. When trains stop running on Christmas day, a phone call young lovers still find time to meet.

Susan is able to come to meet Joe, but with no place to go, what will the young couple have to do far from home? Stranded and hungry, Rockford Junction is far from the most ideal place for Christmas. Harry picks up the couple, but where is the diner he promised to take them to? The cryptic man, bordering on creepy stalker, takes them to his own house to enjoy the holiday with his own family.

Their time together is spent in comfort, with an adopted family, but it runs short. As Joe prepares to return to the train station he sings, Silent Night.
