Arriving home, Philip finds a sleeping woman in his doorway. Who is the older woman, and why does she seem to know Philip so well? Lucille has been hearing strange sounds from the bungalow next door. Tapping noises are heard, but it turns out to be Rogers. Though it’s all innocent enough on the surface, cracks in the story, and the wall, raise flags of suspicion for Philip. Suddenly, the situation explodes with the sound of a gunshot.

Who shot Rogers? He’s in bad shape in the hospital, but the cops want first crack at getting his story. While Marlowe waits, he has a good look at Roger’s bungalow. Will that crack in the wall hold a clue?

Calling in a bluff, Marlowe puts the pressure on the shooter. There’s still a matter of what the shooting was all about. Are there some hidden valuables on the property? Skeletons in the closet are no match for the power of love.
