Lum and Abner had been running a contest on how to spend Diogene’s money. None of the suggestions are worthwhile. Their latest problem is that Ulysses S Quincy insists on building a toll bridge. The gents discussed his past contraptions and how easily he forgets about them. The most ridiculous thing is that the town has no river to put a bridge across. It’s enough to drive Lum stark raving mad crazy. Abner gets confused over the term of what a toll keeper is. The latest debate is over the name of the bridge, and the gents worry if they can trust Squire to help them out in their legal matters.
Cedric enters and needs some help writing a letter. He wants to write to one of the local soldier boys, and figures Ernest would like to get a letter from a celebrity. For matters of national security, Cedric wants to write it in invisible ink. But how will Ernest ever be able to read it, if it’s invisible?
As Cedric leaves, Squire Skimp arrives to report on his legal examinations. Since the money was left for the community, it needs to be spent with community input. It doesn’t mean there is no solution to keep Quincy from getting his toll bridge. Abner tries to warn Lum not to do it but, he signs without reading Squires document. Has he just signed his rights away to the reward money? Cedric may have saved the day, since Lum signed a document with in invisible ink.
