As Britt rides the trail, he stops in at a home that looks in need of care. The woman is the widow of General Gilford, and although the common belief is the General was killed by Indians five years ago, Anna is clinging to hope, or is it just a bad case of denial. as she believes he’s still alive. What can be done for the poor, misguided widow?

There’s a rumor in town that kids have reported seeing the ghost of the General at the widow’s house. Is it just mischief, or might there be something to it?

Britt does some sneaking around himself, and learns a troubling secret. Can the General actually be alive? Why the big secret of his death for all these years? The story of his great shame comes out, but is there a solution for the General? Can he ever come out of hiding, and face life?
