The feed room is all set up for Diogenes Smith to move in with his printing press. The contest to find the most honest man in Pine Ridge continues. Lum has decided he wants to help Diogenes write those pamphlets he puts out. Will this be what it takes to put him in solid with Diogenes? He figures he has a couple weeks with the pamphlets written up already, and shares some ideas with Abner.
Since both of the gents want to win the contest, but only one can win, Lum suggests to Abner that they should both help to make sure one of the 2 of them wins. Diogenes arrives, and to appear humble Lum suggests Abner recommend him to the stranger as his helper. The printing press has arrived, and soon the work of printing can begin. The eloquent man talks about pouring his lifeblood into his presses. A remark that confuses Abner who think that’s how he gets the red letters onto the pages.
Diogenes waxes eloquent as he tells how he has trusted others to help him in his work, only to be let down. Would this be a good time for the gents to recommend Lum as a helper? Lum tries to hide the fact that he has been practicing writing pamphlets by claiming their grocery orders. A little confused, Abner spills the beans about them actually being pamphlets. As Abner recites one of Lum’s quotations, it puts him in a position to be Diogenes do helper.
