Fibber McGee and Molly – Fixing Toys the Day Before Christmas. ep496, 461224

Three kings kneeling, with stars in the background.

As Fibber repairs toys for needy children, Wallace Wimple visits. He has his bird book with him, but he’s not happy with the publisher. Could he write a better bird book? Molly wonders if his big old wife, Sweetie Face ever goes bird watching with the henpecked man. Millicent Carstairs pops in to tease Fibber about playing with the toys. Will she be impressed with Fibber’s valiant effort for charity? Does she still have it in her to use her childhood talents, and play a trumpet? Billy Mills plays, Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.

Mayor Latrivia visits to say how touched he is at hearing that Fibber is doing such a good deed for the kids, and wants to help deliver the toys. When Harlowe visits for the commercial he also gets in a plug for a special show coming up featuring Fred Wareing.
Doc Gamble learns about the upcoming Fred Wareing special, and shares his expectation to be busy doctoring on the holiday due to drunk drivers. Teeny pops in, and Fibber has to admit that he really isn’t good at fixing toys. More secrets pour forth, and the McGee’s are faced with a Christmas without gifts for each other. Still, it’s the nicest Christmas that the McGee’s have had.

On a traditional note, for the show, Teeny brings in her Caroling friends to perform their version of the Night Before Christmas.

Note: So, what’s the deal with all the plugs for Fred Waring?
Traditions tend to evolve in the world of entertainment, especially as celebrities age, retire, and die off. In recent years it has been Dick Clark with his New Years Eve party in New York, with the nation counting down as the big red ball drops. Now that he has passed on, new traditions have begun. Well, back in the era of early radio, it was Fred Wareing who was closely associated with those holiday festivities. He was as familiar to the listening audience as Dick Clark has been to recent pop culture, a fixture, and a mainstay.
