the library is becoming quite the success, with people donating books and coming to read in the reading room. Instead of the usual grocery orders, Abner Fields telephone calls to check on the latest title availabilities to check out. Abner takes down the combination order of groceries and library books then goes to see what Grandpap has found in the almanac.
Grandpap recites cities and their populations and elevations, when Lum enters with an armload of books. It’s a library keeps growing at this rate, Lum figures will soon outpace the one at the county seat. When Lum finds the book about cooking, he suddenly envisions himself as a much admired and envied chef.
Lum reads recipes from the gourmet book, while Grandpap recites facts about automobiles and the weather of 1936 according to the almanac. From Lum finds the concept of baked Alaska interesting, but Abner can’t figure how come somebody would put ice cream in the oven.
When Abner has to turn customers away from buying bread due to lack of delivery, Lum gets the big idea that he’ll start his own bakery.
