the new bakery is now been set up in the store, and Lum is the self-appointed head chef. When Abner arrives for the morning, he surprised to find that Lum has been busily baking since 5 AM. Even Grandpap has been in the store since 5:30 a.m. to get a head start in reading the almanac. He shared some details about the lifespan of an elephant. How does that compare to a rhinoceros?
Lum is proud of his new invention, prune bread. Will Abner be brave enough to try it? Lum got the idea from a recipe for raisin bread. Abner promises he will do any other chore in the place except for being Lum’s taste tester. The gents decide Bill tested together, sampling a bite at the same time.
Abner is a little surprised at some of Lum’s substitutions in the recipe. Maybe he should take the seeds out of his next batch. Since he didn’t have a regular oil, he substituted coal oil. Lum goes to the feed room to get more flour for the next batch, and let Abner ducks out. He tries to have Grandpap back him up on his excuse that he needs to go home. It seems that the same illness that is afflicted Abner has now affected Lum, and he announces to Grandpap that he also needs to go home.
