Looking forward to a vacation on a dude ranch, Philip Marlowe finds himself on the job. Rainbow Ranch is run by Paul Morton, an unlikable man, and jealous of his wife.

At the bunkhouse, Philip talks with Sawyer, a cowboy who actually keeps the place running. A thump on the head sends Philip back to Morton, instead he talks with a pair of jovial city slickers enjoying their vacation. Just then, a body is turned up, and Philip is sure Paul Morton’s death is no accident.

It’s off to interview Mrs. Morton. She shares what she knows about her dead husbands silk smuggling business. Does that let her off the hook with Marlowe, and a motive to kill her husband?

The search is on to find Virgil Sawyer. Suddenly an unexpected clue changes everything. It’s time to confront a killer. A conspiracy for murder is exposed. In epilog, Philip tells all the details.
