It’s the close of another day in Summerfield and Gildersleeve arrives home at the end of his day to learn from Leroy about Marjorie’s latest love interest. Though the starry-eyed Marjorie shares some tender, poetic movements, Leroy still thinks the guy is a goof, but Gildy gets a kick out of her crush. After dinner Gildy accommodates Marjorie as she has Rodney over. Gildy eavesdrops as he leaves the young couple alone.

The timid Rodney almost gets his courage up to ask Marjorie to the dance, if not for the interruptions from Birdie and Gildersleeve. Later Gildy tells Floyd the barber all about it. Floyd offers the advice that if jealousy was involved, it may spur the timid Rodney to act faster. Will it work, or just drive a wedge between the bashful boyfriend?

The day of the dance finds Marjorie upset over Gildersleeve sabotage. The dampened spirits pervade the house, except for Leroy, who is typical self. is there another way to save the day? It’s a costume party so Gildy gets the only costume he can, and intends to take Margorie to the dance. Gildy is pretty impressed with himself, but will Marjorie be as enthusiastic? Wearing his lion suit, Gildy pops into Peavey’s to try and give him a scare. Judge Hooker drops in the drugstore to make wisecracks at Gildy’s expense.

At home, there’s some good news and bad news. Rodney has made up with Marjorie, but Gildy seems to be stuck in his lion suit. Richard Crenna is Rodney.
