After having enough of the modern techniques of the book on salesmanship, Abner convinces Lum that it’s only good use is to toss it into the wood burning stove. Lum tells Abner about another high-tech device, an adding machine. Abner marvels at how smart such a machine is, but he thinks he can crunch numbers at least as well. After a bit more confusion on the thinking machine, Cedric enters with a piece of mail. The company that Lum bought the salesmanship book from has sent him an offer on a correspondence course. The flowery sales letter appeals to Lum’s ego, and feeling especially favored, he makes his choice of programs to enroll in. There’s just one catch, the book that Abner just burned had a coupon to get the course for free.
