Harold Peary at the microphone, wearing a suit and hat. A black and white photograph of Harold Peary, a man in a suit and tie, smiling and looking off to the side. He is standing in front of a plain background, with his hands in his pockets. Peary was a comedian and actor, best known for his role as "The Great Gildersleeve" on radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. The photograph conveys a sense of classic Hollywood glamour and style.

After the last episode, it has come about that Gildersleeve’s actually did capture a burglar, and has a brief moment of glory in the radio. He is proud of the media attention, especially in the newspaper write up and photo, although his picture is a little dated, and even Birdie laughs at the image of the thin Gildersleeve.

On the bus, Gildy tries to get the attention of, and impress a gal on the bus. He brags to the young woman, but she abruptly leaves the bus.

In the office, Bessy compliments Gildersleeve on his feats. Apparently Gildy was smitten by the mystery woman on the bus, even though their encounter was so short. A phone call comes into the water commissioner’s office, and it’s the woman from the bus. She hangs up when a man comes in, and it’s just the thing to set Gildersleeve on another mystery case.

Does it involve gangsters? An encounter with the judge just results in being teased. Gildersleeve finds her coming out of Peavey’s, but she gets away when she boards the bus. Inside Peavey’s e talks about who the gal might be.

After the commercial, and back in the office, Gildersleeve wonders with Bessy over the mystery of the bus lady. Who is she, and what kind of trouble might she be in? Gildy relaxes as Bessy runs out for another shake. He topples out of his chair, sees stars, and when he gets up, his adventure really begins.

The woman knocks at the door, and in ominous tones, she tells of her escape from a gang member. He agrees to hold on to a package for her. Gildy and his girl assistant Bessy go snooping around the streets of Summerfield, just real-life radio detectives. Except that those radio detectives always have a dippy female assistant, says Bessy.

What kind of trouble will they uncover? Will Gildersleeve be able to handle facing up to the hardcase gangsters? Hiding among the mannequins, Gildersleeve is found out when he is tickled, then a fight breaks out, a thump on the head and… Gildy wakes up in his office. The woman enters and explains the real mystery, the meaning of the package, and the mysterious phone call she made earlier.
