The gents are hiding out at Lum’s house with only dark clouds overhead. Abner gets confused since it’s a bright sunny day outside. What exactly did the letter from Mrs. Barrington say? Lum claims she told him the diamonds did not belong to her. Abner is sure the letter contained more than that. What else did she say? Will Lum have to abandon his marriage hopes?
Since the gents had already shipped an empty box to Mr. Devereaux, how will Dave reconcile their snooping into it? Will it be possible to return the diamonds to him was that being arrested for robbery? Abner keeps prodding his friend to make sure there is something in the letter he is not telling about. Does it relate to matters of love? Does it relate to finding a good fishing hole? Maybe it relates to hunting dogs. Abner isn’t taking the hands that Lum just wants to be left alone.
Abner gets confused over one of Lum’s old entered sayings. He doesn’t understand why the two of them can travel just as fast if they both write on the train, or a car, or bicycle or whatever mode of transportation they decide to take. Abner keeps trying to guess their riddle of Lum’s figure of speech. Lum returns their worries to the bag of diamonds they find in their possession. Should he take Abner’s advice and just take them to the Sheriff’s office at the county seat? Lum finally comes clean with the contents of the letter. It seems that she mistook his photo for a picture of the jewel Steve, and she has alerted the authorities to be on the lookout for Lum.
