An aged man was found dead, with a bashed in head, and a distraught young widow. Is Mrs. Applebee telling the truth when she claims Tom was already dead when she found him? Her story is in conflict from her admission the night before, when she was drunk, and spoke freely to the police sergeant responding to the case.
Young George claims he was in the garage, working on a car. Suddenly both he and Mrs. Applebee clamor to take the blame for the killing. The Scotland Yard inspector can see motive in a wife neglected by a grumpy old husband, for the attentions of a young 18-year-old man.
The issue for the inspector is to figure out which story to believe. Mrs. Applebee seems plausible, but she’s lying about some of the details. She is clearly trying to cover up for someone else. Though the police wonder who the man in the story could be, it should be clear to the listener. The question is in how long it will take to put young George in the hot seat. What’s the tip off for them? When they get his whole story, George’s story fits the evidence. It still didn’t keep each defendant from claiming guilt with great vehemence. In the end, how will the jury decide the case? How will the hand of justice figure into the outcome?
