A resident at the Alamo Hotel, Mr. Bowlin, is found dead in his room. Bixby and Liz, the hotel clerk and maid tell Jase Pearson all they know about the man who was in town to do some cattle buying. When taking a closer look at the body, it turns out not to be Bowlin.

Its night when the Rangers get to the Bowlin ranch. On horseback, Jase searches the lay of the land for clues. Locating camps of the ranch hands out with the herd, all Jase wants if someone who can identify the picture he has of the dead man. The cowboys identify the dead man as their boss, Bowlin.

Questioning turns up clues that Bowlin was worried someone was stealing his cattle. With his registered brand, Jase knows where to go to learn who. At another of the camps with the herds, the Rangers find a man who fits the description from the hotel staff. Did he murder his boss? Dave Boudin is put to the test, and taken to the Alamo Hotel to be identified.
Just when it looks like the killer has disappeared without a trace, a clue to link the stolen cattle with a truck, and the hotel key fall into Jase’s lap. Jase has a good idea of how to trap his killer, and cull him out of the cowboys back at the ranch.
