A security guard dressed in a dark uniform is reaching for his sidearm, which is holstered on his right hip. He stands in front of a brick wall, with his left hand resting on his belt. His facial expression suggests a state of high alertness and readiness to act in case of any threat or danger.

It’s the usual brisk midnight business in the Blue Note Cafe, when Ethelbert recognizes a face in the crowd. Casey and Ann have just put the paper to bed, and another face is recognized, a recently released convict. Casey tells the back story of the former prisoner, and how involvement with Gypsies landed him in the big house. Artie got the short end of the stick, and tonight Casey takes him under his wing. Secrets emerge as Casey and Ann get involved in the matter.

When the cops come around to nab Artie Maddox for murder, Casey’s help may be too late in coming.

The cops paint a bleak picture as they lay out the details, but Casey smells a rat in the story. Can he prove there’s something more to Arties’s story to the cops? On the street’s danger awaits, but in the Blue Note once again, Casey explains all as he shares with Ethelbert, and Ann about what really happened, and who was the real killer.
