Actually, the Mystery Playhouse. A tale by William Irish, and one that’s designed to make you think, if you want to solve this puzzler. Clues after a murder are discussed, but is the case as simple as first thought? Burgess is a reporter, but thinks the cops are missing a clue about the fingerprints they found. Despite his editor’s orders to keep uninvolved, and just stick to reporting on police activity and decisions, Burgess can’t help being motivated by seeking justice and truth.
A whiskey shot glass holds the secret to the real killer. The search that Burgess goes on turns up a name, and circumstantial evidence paves the road for Burgess to do his best to help the framed man. Who could have orchestrated the set up? Who had the motive to lay the blame on Hastings? Trying his hand at a bluff, Burgess pretends to be a blackmailer. Circumstance turns more solid, but it means that Burgess is looking down the business end of a gun.
Shots ring out as Burgess faces what could be his last moments. The cops rush in to his rescue, but what tipped them off? Why did they pursue the investigation of the open and shut case? Burgess compares notes with the cops to drive home the solution, but are the reporter’s troubles over?
