mama and the girls fret over there picnic, and whether it will get dark with the lit savings time and place. The girls complain about their fathers driving. He always strives to slow. Will they be going over the mountains? How will they be able to pack the baskets, and include the girls’ boyfriends? Should they have pictures taken? The girls complain about mama wearing her own drafts, and Poppa need to get shave. Will ants be a problem with the picnic? What about cows? The girls claim to like animals, but mom’s favorite animal is a lamb chop.
The conversation turns towards the kind of food that is packed. Boiled eggs, lemon cream pies, chocolate cake and more. With a huge packing list, the girls worry it will fit in the car. Should they plan packing it in a trailer? The girls get busy packing the baskets with mama. They sample the tasty treats as they go. When Poppa gets home from work, he joins in the early picnic feasting. The girls realize that if they don’t stop eating there won’t be any food left for the picnic.
Poppa talks about the preparations he made to make the car travel worthy. The boys arrive and offered to help get the baskets packed, and remark whether Poppa needs a shave. The kids take the baskets, leaving mama and papa to make a final discussion on what clothes to wear.
