As we look in on the Coopers this morning, George, Liz, and Katie are doing their typical morning routines. Liz is worried and afraid to tell George that her mother is coming for a visit. Little does she know; George shares a secret with Katie as well. His mother is to come for a visit.
At the breakfast table, they try their best to butter each other up. After a moment of misunderstanding, George goes from expecting a baby, to expecting his mother-in-law. When the news is in the open, they try to convince the other to not let their own mother come. Which one should be warded off? They both are sent telegrams with the same excuse. Liz’s mom postpones her visit, but George’s mom says she’s coming anyway.
Bea Benaderet is George’s mom, and the mother-in-law jokes and stereotypes are unleashed. The imposing mother is tolerated by George, but Liz has to put her foot down. A week goes by and the visitor has just about worn out her welcome. Even Katie is fed up with the inconveniences imposed on the family. Liz has a plan to get rid of mom, but I think it just backfired. Mother Cooper will be around for another six weeks. She is giddy and dating a doctor.
When will mom brings home her date to meet the proud children? She isn’t ashamed of the family, is she? Mother Cooper gives in, but coaches Liz on being on her best behavior before her date arrives. The doctor, Gale Gordon, meets the family, and Liz does her best to ruin things, fearing that if mom marries the doctor, she’ll be in town all the time. Pouring on her natural, Brooklyn Street charm, Liz does her best to be anti-social. Somehow, I think the plan will still backfire.
In the end, they still get rid of dear old mom. Just in time to go from one house guest to another.
