Audio is poor, but worth a listen to hear a few moments of Jac’s early career on radio. I tweaked the audio to cut out some of the noise, but it’s still staticky.
Mary opens with a poem that carried over from the previous, non-existent episode, one about Winter. Jack brings us news of the week from the Global Traveler. Items come from current events from France, New York, and more, and include Hollywood celebrities, strikes, Groundhogs Day, and others. Frank Parker plays, but his song is snipped from the recording.
The cast talk about where they might take a vacation to escape the wintery weather. Jack mentions travelling to Chicago. He doesn’t say, but it could be to celebrate his upcoming birthday with family there. The play is Jack’s version of Little Women, called Miniature Women. Frank has another musical number snipped, then the feature begins. The spoof kicks off with Jack joking on the side to the audience. Adding a little irreverence to the period piece. The audio gets particularly staticky towards the end of the puns and topical jokes. You’ll know it’s over when the jokes take on a sponsor flavor.
Note: Jack mentions the story from Louisa May Alcot was 50 years old at this time. Long enough to be a well-loved classic. Think of what stories, TV shows, or movies that are roughly 50 years in our past. That’s the same perspective Jack’s audience had with this story.
Despite the poor audio, this is one of my favorites. Maybe not in my top ten, but deserving an honorable mention.
