A curious adventure awaits Dan when Mr. Alexander sends him a letter full of cryptic clues. Dan is to make an appointment with a doctor, but the doctor refuses to let Dan tell him his name. Instead, the doctor wants to find it out for himself with his own eccentric methods.
Who is Matthew Kaye, and why does that name frighten Doctor Ogden? Is this some kind of joke? what’s in it for the mystery man who put Dan Holiday on to the case? The paranoid doc goes to Dan’s place to beg him not to go to the police. The mysterious Mr. Alexander sneaks up on Dan, and thumps him on the head.
Working with Suzy to research files, Dan reads through files and finds a crime story with names that match the characters in this odd case. The cops are tipped off, but when the mystery promises to come to an end in a face-to-face confrontation, Dan needs to think things through. Will Dan be the one in control, or just be walking into a trap?
Will he live long enough to explain the whole twisted case of blackmail and revenge to his secretary, Suzy?
