The last rose of summer, Jack Benny, is introduced.
Its not only embarrassing to Jack to talk about himself all the time, Phil claims its dull as well. Mary teases Phil about being illiterate, and tells secrets on the eating habits of the new tenor, Dennis Day. Jack builds up the play he intends to present, The Women. The guys are to play women, and Mary will have to be a man, and announce the play. Even Rochester and Andy Divine get female roles. Dennis Day sings, Last Night.
Jack gets made up, while dealing with his 5 year old daughter Dennis, and maid, Rochester. Phil phones in with gossip about his trip, and a ladies day out is planned with Don. Catty remarks strike a nerve with Jack, and her husband, Updyke. Phil plays, An Apple for the Teacher.
The ladies put on a civil front, but the claws and catty remarks lay just beneath the clucking of the hens. Will Jack get over the humiliation of his absent hubby, Updyke?
Note: This is the first appearance of Dennis, without Verna Felton, playing his mother to help carry his speaking parts. She’ll be back, but Dennis will soon find his character as the weeks go on.
