After Abner rushed off on the train with Lizabeth to St Louis, and spend the last of their cash along the way, a stranger came looking for him. As Lum is asleep at home, a phone call gets him out of bed.
The long distance call is from Abner. What’s the trouble? Abner fears that he has come so close, but has lost out on his inheritance. Lum tells about the visiting stranger, a lawyer from St Louis who left again to meet the Peabody’s in St Louis.
Abner tells about the skimpy, high priced meals that he and Lizabeth had on the train. He tells Lum how he tried to spend the rest of his cash, but he still is worried about having too much before the deadline. Grandpap pops in to put in a few words. One thing about long distance phone calls in the 1940’s, they were expensive, and feeding the pay phone ought to wipe him out… right?
