Don brings us the man who held the ladder for Clark Gable to elope with Carol Lumbard, Jack Benny. The news of the celebrity wedding is the focus of jokes. Jack also pitches his latest film for Paramount, Man About Town. Mary enters to tell the truth behind Jack’s on screen stunts. Phil is also in the picture with Dorothy Lamour. Kenny is a day late with the April Fools pranks. After a telegram jab from Fred Allen, Kenny Baker sings, At a Little Hot Dog Stand.
Jack and the cast take time to respond to Fred Allen’s jokes at Jack from his own show. Rochester keeps phoning in, but there seems to be bad blood between the valet and Jack. Jack and Mary put on a mini play that Don wrote to pitch the sponsor. It’s enough to make a starving man in the desert pass up substantial food for a taste of that product with the six red letters on the box.
When Phil enters, his movie stardom has gone to his head. After teasing Jack about his rumored act in a burlesque show, Phil is joined by Mary and they sing, I Go for That.
Kenny is upset at the added singing talent, and refuses to be on the show next week… OK, he’ll be here, but he won’t sing… OK, he’ll sing, but he won’t be good. Will we finally learn why Rochester is on the outs with Jack? He tried to pawn Carmichael for $30. As the play is announced, a visit from Schlepperman is a sight for sore feet. At the last moment Rochester phones in to say Carmichael is out of hock, but did he sell something just as dear to Jack to do it?
