Jack Benny – Jack Challenges Fred Allen To A Boxing Match. ep322, 390205

Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone and Don Wilson posing for a photo in 1938.

The Waukegan Bomber, Kid Benny, weighs in for jokes about boxing and the latest round of jabbing from Fred Allen’s most recent show. Mary tells secrets on Jack’s attempts at exercising in his back yard. The fitness follies continue as Phil arrives, and demonstrates his fictional theme song for his fictional sponsor for his yet to emerge radio show. After an interruption, Phil plays, Umbrella Man.

Phil and the band get teased about being corny, before Don presents a play of the average American. Jack and Mary dramatize the sponsor message. Kenny finally arrives to get in his own jokes about “you know who’ and the teasing he gave Jack. Andy Divine phones in to invite Jack over to his farm. As he and Mary leave, Kenny sings, I Dream of Jeanie.

As Rochester drives the Maxwell, Jack gripes about the bumpy roads. But the poorly maintained car manages a little barnstorming. Stripping down to boxing trunks, Jack begins his training. Mary volunteers, but Rochester gets dragged into being Jack’s sparring partner. Is that what you call shadow boxing? If it is, it’s the kind that’ll knock out your bridge work.
