The story of a blind singer of the spaceways. The flippant singer has gotten on the captain’s bad side, but today he has been offered the chance to redeem himself. The captain is determined to go ahead with the important space mission, but his singing crewman, Riesly seems to believe there could be an equipment failure. Though it annoys the captain, the singing crewman does his job, but with an utter lack of military bearing.
In a power room accident, the singing crewman loses his eyesight. Later, and back on the ground, we catch up again with the blind singer, and his songs have taken on a new flavor as he sees the world with new insight. He begins to be a favorite at the port bars, and his songs gain wide spread fame.
Years pass, and now Riesly is an old man who just wants to go back to the green hills of his home in the Ozarks. It takes some begging for the old space bum to catch his ride home, but when the new fangled, all automatic features in the power room fails, Riesly gets one last chance to shine, and save the crew.
It may be the last thing he does, but will he survive long enough to finish his latest song? Will he reach his home alive, and those green hills? Written by Robert Heinline
