Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve needs to finish up his Christmas shopping, but needs to save money. As he tries to figure where to cut corners, Birdie gets the wrong idea and thinks her gift may catch the ax on the budget. If not her, where can he cut a corner? Everybody is so deserving, LeRoy, Marjorie, and certainly not the baby.
Gildy makes the rounds to touch base with Peavey, and his other friends, looking for a place to economize. Gildy pops into a department store to make his last minute purchases. Will his second guessing get him into trouble? Join the comic fun as he shops and tries to decide. He doesn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings, but he still needs to watch his budget, what a decision!
He really wants to get something good for his fiancee, Adeline, but when she says to get something simple for her, he nearly buys it. It’s that old trap, when a woman says to not get anything special, she means the oppisit. Close call Gildy. Stick with that expensive gift.
How will Gildersleeve solve his troubles? After a touching rendition of Silent Night by a chorus of singers in the store, he makes his decision. Who wants to be sensible on Christmas anyway?
