After harrowing encounters with Indians, Deerslayer and Judith are in the lake cottage, trying to figure how to rescue their friends. Without help from Heddy, a war chest is opened. Will it contain a ransom to deal with the Indians? Though a pistol has exploded, no harm is done to our heros. There’s plenty of treasure to trade with the Indians, but they have more to unpack. Some of the treasures indicate they could belong to someone other than Judith;s father.
Deerslayer thinks some of the carved ivory pieces are idols. Such things ought not to be in the possession of a good Christian man.
The hazardous journey is to begin. Heddy will be safe enough in holding down the fort, since the Indians think she’s simple minded. Judith insists on joining Deerslayer on the raft. eddy has notions of teaching the Indians about Christianity. Dismissing her ideas and leaving her behind, Deerslayer is sure the eyes of Indians are on his every me. Are concerns founded?
