Sam is a gangster who lays it on the line for a gal who is dating his brother. He wants her to leave him alone and break it off. Will Irene take his offer and train ticket, and leave town for work elsewhere? What does Joe have to say on the matter?

Joe doesn’t want to cross his brother, and it takes a confrontation at gunpoint with Irene to begin to move him to run away with her. In writing a note to Sam to say that he’s leaving, his cowardice kicks in. An argument ensues, a gunshot is fired in the heat of the moment. An accident maybe? With the note conveniently also sounding like a suicide note, Irene sets the scene to point that way for the cops.

Nerves get to Irene, especially when she has a house guest. How much did the woman learn? Was she really so sound asleep when Irene came and went on her murderous meeting with Joe? A phone call from Sam makes it clear that her handiwork was indeed enough to fool the cops, but not him.

Sam’s death threats have Irene on the run, and she’s
paranoid at the thought that someone is following her to do her in. Desperation sets in when her house guest has managed to find her, and is on the same train. Gunplay is unavoidable to keep secrets quiet. But will it really? The Whistler holds other plans for a more complete justice.

Note: There’s a cameo from Jack Benny at the beginning as the Fiddler. It’s due to an episode where the Whistler appeared on his show a few days earlier.
