Vic and Rush enjoy the day as they sit on the porch swing, and talk about the merits of bananas to apples. As Rush is complaining about his nemesis, Nicer Scott, Sade joins to tell about her annoyance with the kid.
Sade also brings gossip about their neighbor, Mr Donahue. It seems he is asking for a demotion, and his old job back. Through their talking, the listener can gain a glimpse of life on a railroad steam engine as it travels it’s rail lines. Sade marvels at the trouble of standing on your feet the whole trip. The Fireman, or Coalman as the job is sometimes called, may get to sit down, but he also has to shovel coal a large part of the way. How would you like to shovel coal the whole 6 hour trip to a remote town? Standing to watch gages might not be so bad, if you ask me.
Sade also mentions that the train inspector can’t fraternize with the lowly engineer and fireman while off duty. Such is the life in a leadership, or management position.
