As Matt and Chester ride the range, talking about Chesters troubles, they come across a wagon with a broken wheell. With a shotgun barrel point Matt’s way, he soon figures out the man and woman are unsociable. Finally Matt places where he saw them before. The man is an Army desserter that Matt has to take back to Dodge City.
With the wheel fixed, Matt offers voiceover to tell about the ride back home. At Delmonico’s he tells Kitty about the happenings, and more details surrounding the desserter come out. The young couple are planning to marry, the woman blames Matt for any troubles that may come her way due to the arrest. In the days of the old West, the Army dealt harshly, evenn the death sentense for those who desserted. This time though, the soldier is sentenced to hard labor at Fort Leavenworth.
The trouble won’t quit. News comes that the desserter escaped while en route. Now the Army wants Matt’s help in recapturing, but will Matt be able to? Will Matt be able to talk sense to the bride to be, and get her help in locating her fiancee?
Matt decides to just watch the womans activities in hopes of having her lead him to the desserter, but she is a little too sneaky for him. Even when Matt and Chester follow her tracks, she knows enough tricks to make it hard for the lawmen. Instead he and Chester find an unexpected tragic scene that definitely ends the problem with the Army, but it’s far from the result the woman planned when she got involved with helping her fiancee.
