It all happened in San Pedro, as Marlowe goes to look for his new client on the dingy water front. Mike Basso is having trouble with a hot head punk, and after being roughed up, he wants help from aPhilip Marlowe. Is there more danger in store for Mike? Philip investigates, and crosses paths with a dame. Giles is a friend of Johnny Dyke, but when push comes to shove, Philip manages to get him to squeal.

After alerting the cops, Philip returns to interrogate Christina Dyke, but the business end of her gun convinces Marlowe to mind his own business. Retracing his steps through the trail of characters, Marlowe digs for more clues. He and Giles make a bee line for a dock warehouse. Will there be more bodies to keep the cops busy?
