The new broom party has had their rally in the Lodge hall, that stronghold of Squire Skimps Liberal Conservative party. The rally ended soon after Abner’s straightforward answers of yes, or no. In the store today Abner enters after grocery deliveries, and is frustrated that people are making fun of him about his answer he gave to Snake Hogan.
Lum does it think it looks good for Abner, if he throws rocks at kids who make fun of him. Squire enters and complains that Lum is guilty of political skulduggery. He feels that Lum delivered political speeches, for personal gain, on the floor of the lodge hall. If that don’t beat the bugs a-fighting. Abner doesn’t understand a thing about what Squire just said but he knows he doesn’t like it. After the visit, Lum is determined to turn on a whirlpool campaign. What can he do to make everyone in town set up and take notice, and complementing how great and brave a leader Abner is.
Lum wants to think up a stunt that Abner can do. Something like rescuing someone from danger. What if there was a fire, or a disaster, and someone needed help? Lums imagination kicks in. The flames are getting higher, screams at heard in the house, Abner doesn’t listen to anybody and goes inside to face the smoke and flames. Is this the last everyone will see of Abner Peabody? Exiting the fiery building, Abner collapses, exhausted as he saves Clarabelle.
But Lum figures nothing like that would happen anyway, so why keep thinking about it. When Grandpap enters the gents wonder if they can trust him to be on their side? When he tells about the latest from the compeetition, Lum declares its time for mud slinging.
