A young fellow is having a good time in the Long Branch Salloon. when a crusty old cowhand gives Kitty a hard time, she shows she can stick up for herself, but when the kid tries to intervene, Cowboy Joe guns him down. The kid drew first, so Joe is off the hook for murder for now. Matt has his own way to handle the gunman that Joe wasn’t expecting.
With the wind knocked out of cowboy Joe’s sails, Matt turns him loose. He talks with Chester and Kitty about the gunman, and some of the mentality that men like him had. Time goes by and news of the drunken Joe reaches Matt. Is there anything to be concerned over?
For the sake of the story, Joe is something of a well known gunman. Problems have surfaced for him. Is Joe losing his touch? Is his alcoholism affecting his courage? Maybe it’s just plain old guilt over his mispent life. Matt leaves him to face his fate alone.
