In the Dodge City jail, Chester is keeping tabs on a stranger on the street. Is the suspicious man out to gun someone down? Matt is frustrated by Chester’s play by play description so goes to check on the man himself. The man is from out of town, and has his mind made up to marry Pearl, one of the salloon girls in the Long Branch. The armed man is determined to let nobody stand in his way. Why should they? That’s what matt wants to know.
The man is held at the jail until Matt can get more details. Maybe Miss Kitty can shed some light on the situation? Matt tracks down the players in the drama, Pearl, and the other man that she is sweet on. A man who is equally determined to prevent anyone from coming between himself and Pearl. What does Pearl have to say about the marriage, and who she wants to marry?
When put on the spot, Pearl makes her choice, and it isn’t the country guy with his mind made up, and he goes away, but he claims his mind is still made up. End of story, right?
Even after Pearl marries her gambler boyfriend, it takes a time, but a report of a shooting at Pearl’s house reaches Matt. It’s no surprise who did it, but why? Matt and Chester go to face off with the killer at his homestead out of town. The love struck homesteader seems honestly confused as the story of Pearl’s murder comes out. He is the killer, but being isolated, he never realized the two were married, and thought he would just get his rival out of the way.
Moral of the Story: Taking the law into your own hands is never a smart idea.
