William Conrad offers voiceover that describes a train robbery in action. Carl was a man who was hard of hearing. In the robbery, he was shot, and his belt with a silver buckle was taken.
Elsewhere and uninformed of any robberies, Britt Ponset is awakened at his camp by a couple of rough types. Kit and Lex claim to be part of a posse who are out looking for a couple of bandits. They convince Britt to let them tag along as he is going the same way. When the three riders stop for a break, Britt notices the fancy buckle that Kit is wearing, and what appears to be blood stains on it. Just enough to catch his notice, but not enough to alert him to danger.
Along the rough trail, Britt has time to think, and we learn some of his suspicions. As they bed down for one last night’ of camp in the rough terrain, Britt has more troubling thoughts. There’s no reason to doubt the story the two men have told, Britt doesn’t know anything about the train robbery, but all the pieces to their story about the posse aren’t adding up.
Then in the early morning hours, Britt has a close call when he awakens in the nick of time before a shootout begins. Britt has been shot, and he’s growing weaker by the moment. Can he hold out to survive this one? He gets off one last shot, but it goes wild. Is this the end of Britt Ponset? Have the bandits won?
