Meeting by the Wehandt blacksmith shop, Abner talks to Grandpap about the gun he is now carrying. The gents mourn over the change in the friendship between Lum and Abner. Grandpap figures it’s all because of the high ideas that Lum has. He’s always trying to be successful in business. Has he turned into a spavin legged money-hungry varmint? Should Abner be on his guard all day long?
Elsewhere, Lum speaks to Squire and is convinced he is mistaken about Abner. The mystery story that Squire lent to him yesterday seems to have calmed his mind. Abner has too sweet and kind of a nature to be the kind of murderer that Lum suspected he was yesterday.
As Squire leaves, Lum answers the party line. He talks to Miss Barton about the grand reopening, and giveaways that they passed out. Cigars for the men, and pincushions for the ladies. As he takes her order, Abner enters. Lum tries to hint at something special he is planning, but Abner is so paranoid he mistakes Lum’s meanings. When he’s asked to work late to handle a delivery from the wholesale house, Abner grows suspicious again. While he’s in the feed room, Cedric enters and breaks the news to Lum that Abner is now carrying a gun. Now it’s Lum’s turn to be nervous.
