On the Spindrift Jack, Billy, Betty, and their friend Michel pack the gear needed for a trip to the interior. They have spotted a rival from a previous adventure. They also learn that Michel can speak the local dialect. Yates, the rival on the other ship asks to board. What is his business?
The good-natured Yates claims to just want to pass the time of day. When he tries to speak the local dialect to Michel, he pretends to not understand. Does Yates have anything to hide when asked by Billy and Jack? His only claim is in collecting and selling spices. Jack makes the connection to the man he encountered in the crowded market place. Betty doesn’t believe him one bit.
As Yates has a look around the Spindrift, Jack cautions his friends to not talk too much about their current adventure. Is Yates snooping around a little too much? Will it come to blows to get Yates off the Spindrift? Michel reports to Jack what Yates said to his natives as he left. Why is Yates interested in rifles?
