After leaving their uranium safely guarded by the Army, Jack and his friends discuss going into the interior. The guys help hoist the heavy box out of the Spindrift. Betty worries that the soldiers won’t be able to take the box off the truck by themselves.
Jack reports to uncle Jim about the native in town who had a watch like the one belonging to professor Lorrie. The kids describe his reluctance in showing them the initials on the back. Before running away, the man admitted he bought it from a Morel trader. Jack and his friends do their best to unravel the mystery, and finally, figure they need to visit that Morell peddler.
Uncle Jim plans on securing a packhorse to carry the equipment they may need when the Lieutenant who has a matching wristwatch offers it for the kids to use. The pedometer is shown off, and how to calibrate it to measure steps. Jack notices a band of natives. Is their little ship the same one with a white sail that gave them such trouble in a past adventure?
