Jack and his friends are searching for a native who has a wristwatch that they believe belongs to professor Lorrie. Even if they find the native, how will they communicate with him, not knowing any of the local dialects? He might think they are stealing his watch. What if he calls the police on them?
Betty and the others comment on the sights of the people on the street. Billy gets onto her for wanting to take time to do some shopping. Jack manages to spot the man with the watch. When asked, he can only say a few lines of English. Trying to use sign language, the man thinks Jack wants to trade his watch for the spices he has.
In the confusion, the man gets away, but can Jack keep up with him in the crowded market place? Jack tries to tell a police officer what he’s looking for, and why. The cops are willing to help if it’s stolen property, but the man is reluctant for anyone to take his watch.
Finally capturing the man, and forcing him to show them the initials on the back of the watch, the cop speaks to him. What does he know about professor Lorrie or the rumors of an uprising?
