In the fire-damaged store, Lum is on the party line to report how grandpap rescued them from the fire. Is the tragedy a blessing in disguise? Abner is glad to be alive and has good friends. Cedric enters and learns of the search efforts to catch the robbers.
The place is a mess, and Cedric thinks it’s going to take a whole ball of money to fix it all up. As the gents poke around, Lum answers more phone calls that report on the progress of the manhunt. The gents can’t say enough how glad and thankful they are just to be alive, and have good friends.
Grandpap enters and the gents are sidetracked by Cedric, as he tells how he guessed the right number of gumballs in a jar once. Grandpap reminds the gents that they owe him his life savings of $750, plus interest every day. Will he be forgiving at all in letting the guys off the hook?
Cedric keeps relating how he made a few bucks in winning bets. Then Squire Skimp arrives to break the news that the mortgage he extended to Lum is due. Where’s lady luck now?
