On the way to Smoke Fals, Brit is delayed when he stays with a friend to help him get over a medical ailment. As he rides into town, Brit is stopped by the woman in charge of a charity event and begs his help with the supper. The fast talking woman ropes Brit into partaking before he knows what’s going on. With his original errand done Brit goes to the festivities.
The guys are to bid on lunch baskets, and the tasty treats inside, and of course the lady who fixed it up will be the companion for the night. Brit makes some observances about the crowd, and some of the men making their bids. Suddenly the bidding for a particular basket skyrockets, and the woman’s excitement over the money for her charity turns to worry when it becomes plain that the key bidders grow violent. Brit breaks up the fight, but after one of the men ride away, word comes that the sheriff has been shot by a rogue wildcat outlaw on the way out of town.
Later, the sheriff is layed up, mending, as Brit goes to talk to him. The sheriff knows what has to be done, but is apprehensive at the thought of what it will take to capture the missing Faulk. Brit is asked to lead the posse.
The sheriff is in no condition to ride out, and the posse has already formed up. They’ll ride out with, or without Brit. The idea to use a smaller force and use stealth to sneak up on the man will be more affective than the large posse. Spud, one of the bidders in the earlier festivities, wants the glory, and wants to be in the small band. When Brit suggests another man, Spud rides off on his own
Brit talks to his hand picked man, the same one who was in the bidding war, as they ride along. Why did Brit pick this guy? He has his reasons. After a good night’s sleep, Brit provides voice over description as he rides the trail with Tom. They talk about their chances of tracking their man, and Tom offers suggestions of possible hiding places.
There hasn’t been any signs of Faulk’s trail yet, then Brit spots what they’re looking for. A cave is found and Brit describes it as he explores it. Is Faulk hiding in the darkness? Footsteps are heard. The plot thickens when Faulk has a captive, it’s Spud, the disgruntled posse member from the night before.
Brit talks through his situation as he backs off. Then there’s an opportunity, and Tom jumps on it to shoot the killer, rescue Spud, and prove that he is more of a man than the townsfolk grant to his reputation. The two rivals now have one last bickering moment, but with the levelheaded Brit, the situation is cooled, and they all ride off.
Brit offers a last voice over with a thought of what will happen between the new friends when they keep going after the same girl’s affections.
