Encountering a boy on the range, who seems to be a run away at first, Hopalong Cassidy takes him home. Hoppy and his sidekick, California, learn about the poor homesteading family who are going without the usual Christmas festivities and celebrations. to make matters worse, the Stillwell family has suddenly been plagued by rustlers.
It’s the off season to get top dollar for their small herd of cattle, and the rancher is willing to suffer through the hard times. Still, if they could only sell a few head of cattle, it would be enough to make the holidays a little more festive. If it weren’t for those pesky rustlers who chose this time of year to whittle the herd away.
Hoppy and California have good reason to suspect the grumpy ranch hand, Johnny No Name. But when they track him to town, Hoppy thinks he might know who’s behind the rustling. The secret is out, the real rustlers are exposed, and the poor homesteaders have a Merry Christmas after all.
