A new adventure is about to set sail with Shipmaster Philip Carney and Red Gallagher, on the ketch Scarlet Queen. The port of call is Hong Kong, and our heros are greeted with a message that they are to be taken into custody.
The polite and soft spoken Chinese police kindly deposit Carney into the paddy wagon at the point of automatic Tommy guns. Carney is descriptive as he is taken to a house, about 5 miles out of town, and none to thrilled at being yet again tossed into jail the moment he sets foot in port. I can’t blame him on that one.
Along with Gallagher, Philip is introduced to his host, a man with a girl who is being held for ransom. A meeting is held, and word comes that the kidnapped girl will be released if a deal can be made with Kang. Will Kang pay out 5 million bucks for the girl? What does Carney have to do with all this?
Carney is a bit rude, but hospitality is still shown on him. He is separated from Gallagher, but left alone with the gal. The whole situation is making Carney mad at the way he is being treated as he tries to work for Kang. The rudeness causes the girl to become defensive as she tries to reason with the angry ship captain. Is he turning his back on his plight? Has he abandoned his friend Red Gallagher?
Carney is taken from his room to be taken back to his ship, but he finds his crew held in a local warehouse, and his host has the run of the Scarlet Queen. What kind of tricks is this guy playing? Carney is being pestered for information, but he doesn’t know anything that he’s being asked about. All he wants to do is sail, and be set free. For now, Philip offers to work with the underling, with the attitude to give his captors some slack, so he can make his play later. With all the games, and tricks up each other’s sleve, Carney tries to get reunited with Gallagher, but whose game will win out? Who can be trusted?
Expecting the worst, Carney thinks he’ll end up finding Gallagher roughed up, and in bad shape. Instead, Gallagher is rested and spry,and ready to spring into action to fight his way out with Carney at his side. With the climactic fight over, the true loyalties come out, and the Scarlet Queen is able to set sail once again.
Carney discloses that he had been given instructions from Kang that if such a stone wall as this situation presented in this adventure, he is to head back east, and the next port will be Manilla.
