Audio seems a little muffled, but OK.
News comes that a Sergeant is willing to take the job offered by the gents, and help in the Jot Em Down store. Doing his best to give the sarge a good day’s work, Abner has left all his usual cleaning duties aside. Grandpap enters to join the discussion and anticipation of the new young man.
Grandpap has his own complaints. He thinks someone is doing him dirty regarding his job as telegraph boy. Is someone prying into the private messages sent to residents in the area? Town gossip is shared when interruptions come in the form of a phone call.
In discussing with Miss Emaline the prospects of the football team to do Well, Lum tells his intent to put up Sgt Hartford on a cot in his place. Some of the heavy lifting chores in store for the sarge are discussed, and the expectation of straightening out the store. The store isn’t quite what the sarge had in mind when she arrives, but she isn’t what the gents envisioned either.
Note: The sarge is played by Lurene Tuttle. Remember Mary Conner, the little orphan girl from a season or two ago? She’s the same voice actress, all grown up and back from the war…. sort of.
