Despite Lum’s safe return, the news that grandpap reported about the “big blow out” in Mena has unsettled the gents. Today Abner and grandpap talk about Lum’s queasiness over the explosion. Only it wasn’t an explosion, only a big sale.
The gents turn to the latest town gossip when Lum enters. Lum is still out of sorts, so Abner and grandpap need to speak softly about the latest news on Miss Emiline, the Blevins family, and more. Abner pampers his friend as well as he can in between gossip and taking phone calls.
Under his breath, Abner complains about how grouchy Lum has become. Is he only faking it to get more attention? when folks inquire about Lum, he has been annoyed that Abner has been telling them that he’s fine. Obeying Lum’s request, Abner lets the next caller know how bad off he is. too bad it was Miss Emiline, asking if he is well enough too take her out.
