Lum’s first case turned out to be unsatisfying when the lost wallet wasn’t lost at all. Lum puts the idea of his detective business behind him and shares his idea to convert the Jot Em Down store into a department store. Abner doesn’t quite get it and doesn’t see the need to let people live in apartments in the store.
Explaining how big stores categorize merchandise into departments, instead of lumping it all together as they do in theirs, Abner still has his doubts.
Do the gents really need such things as floorwalkers? Abner just needs to get spruced up more to look his new part, and maybe wear a toupee. Lum claims his overalls won’t cut it anymore. Lum thinks he ought to be known as the eagle of his mercantile domain, and Abner tries to think of what kind of bird he should be known as.
